To the New Sweden settlement in Idaho

Kristina föddes på torpet Ramnås i norra delen av Åsenhöga församling, Jönköpings län. I mars 1890, 22 år gammal, reste hon till Amerika - med slutmål Chicago.*4

 Varför hon reste är okänt. Möjligen reste hon för att ansluta sig till sin moster Rebecka, som emigrerat till USA någon gång efter 1860. *5

 I Chicago fanns hon också 1894 när hennes båda systrar Emma och Augusta också lämnat Sverige och syskonen sammanstrålade i denna stad.

Gifte sig i Idaho Falls

Sen vet vi inget mer om hennes liv i Chicago. Nästa årtal i levnadskrönikan är 1898, då Kristina flyttat till Idaho Falls och gift sig med Oskar Beckman, som emigrerat till USA 1891.

 Oskar Beckman kom från Humla i Västergötland och han tillhörde en skara på fyra utvandrande bröder som alla så småningom slog sig ned i ett område i Idaho Falls som kallas New Sweden. De blev lantbrukare allihop och deras gårdar, som de själva etablerade på ett nybyggarområde, låg alldeles intill varandra. *6

"SW corner of junction..."

Oscar och Kristinas farm hade 1911, när Christinas båda brorsbarn Nanny och Thure emigrerade och kom till dem, adressen: FFD No. 4, Box 71, Idaho Falls.

 I en senare beskrivning anges gårdens läge: "SW corner of junction of New Sweden Road, Idaho, and US 20, Idaho Falls" (= Sydvästra hörnet av korsningen av New Sweden Road, Idaho och interstatsvägen US 20, Idaho Falls).

 1910 hade Oscar och Kristina två drängar vid sin farm. *7

Kristina was born at the crofters cottage Ramnås in the northern part of Åsenhöga parish, Jönköping county. In March 1890, at the age of 22, she went to the America - with final destination Chicago. *4

  Why she emigrated is unknown. She might have gone for her aunt Rebecka, who emigrated to the US sometimes after 1860. *5

 She also was in Chicago when her both sisters Emma and Augusta left Sweden in 1894. The three sisters met in Chicago that year.

Got married in Idaho Falls

After that we don´t know anything more about her life in Chicago. Next stop in her life chronicle is the year 1898, when Kristina had moved to Idaho Falls and married Oscar Beckman, who had emigrated to the USA in 1891.

 Oscar Beckman originated from Humla in county Västergötland in Sweden and was one of four brothers who emigrated and eventually settled in an area in Idaho Falls called New Sweden. They became farmers. All of them and their farms, which they cleared and established on a new settlers area, was all next to each others. *6

"SW corner of junction..."

The farm of Oscar and Kristina in 1911 was having the adress: FFD No. 4, Box 71, Idaho Falls, when the nephews of her - Nanny and Thure - emigrated and arrived to them.

 In later descriptions the situation of the farm is: SW corner of junction of New Sweden Road, Idaho, and US 20, Idaho Falls.

 In 191O Oscar and Kristina employed two farm laborers. *7

Emanuelsson (31 år) på väg mot Cherokee, Nils Herman Emanuelsson (17 år) på väg till Chicago och Christoffer Johannesson (24 år) som skulle till St Paul. Totalt emigrerade 21 åsenhögabor till Amerika detta år.

 Kristina i husförhörslängden för Åsenhöga 1885-94: "Berättigad till nattvard, ordentligt bevistat husförhör. ledigt till äktenskap, egen medborgerligt förtroende. Confirm -84 av S G Hagberg. Flyttat till Nordamerika 12/3 -90".

*5: Rebecka, som bosatt sig i Nebraska, hade reda på att hennes brorsdotter emigrerat och senare bosatte sig i Idaho Falls, visar senare brevväxling i släkten.

*6: I befolkningsräkningen för 1910 hade Oscar Beckmans farm nr 32, och bröderna Gust och Andrew hade 30 respektiver 31.

*7: ur Folkräkningen: August G Pettersson (lantarbetare och inackorderad), 40 år, född i Sverige och immigrerad 1873 och Alfred T Pettersson (lantarbetare och inackorderad), 24 år, född i Sverige och immigrerad 1873.

Emanuelsson (31 years) on his way to Cherokee, Nils Herman Emanuelsson (17 years) with the destination Chicago and Christoffer Johannesson (24 years) heading for St Paul. There was in total 21 emigrants from Åsenhöga this year who moved to America.

 Kristina in the catechetical record of Åsenhöga, 1885-94: "Qualified to the Holy Communion, properly attended the parish catechetical meetings, own civic confidency, confirmated 1884 by S G Hagberg (par. priest). Moved to North America 12th of March 1890".

*5: Rebecka, who settled in Nebraska, was aware of the emigration of her nephew and the fact that the nephew later lived in Idaho Falls, shown by later letters between members of the family.

*6: In the population register 1910 the farm of Oscar Beckmans is no. 32, and the brothers Gust och Andrew had no. 30 and 31 respectively.
