in Idaho Falls

Sommarens höjdpunkt var Torparträffen i Idaho Falls, USA, 5-8 juli 2012.

• Ett tiotal svenskar och drygt fyra gånger så många amerikaner deltog i aktiviteterna. För många av svenskarna var det första gången de besökte USA.

• Främst vill jag rikta ett stort tack till Kathy och Frank Weaver i Idaho Falls, samt deras barn och barnbarn, för det fantastiska arbete de lagt ned för att göra besöket i Idaho och dagarna vi umgicks oförglömliga.

• Torparträffen tog fokus på två saker. Dels att låta deltagarna lära känna varandra, umgås och knyta vänskapsband, dels att följa fotspåren efter de första svenskarna i vår släkt som nyodlade och slog sig ned i New Sweden, som området kallas väster om Idaho Falls.

• Det finns åtskilliga höjdpunkter från dagarna att minnas. Bland dem besöket vid Kristina och Oscar Beckmans gård i New Sweden och de festliga kvällsfesterna i Kathy och Franks trädgård.

• Högtidliga stunder var det när vi hedrade syskonen som kom som immigranter till Idaho på 1910- och 1920-talet: Nanny Beckman (1889-1983), Thure Anderson (1892-1967), Hjalmar Anderson (1898+1956) och Fred Thursie (1901-1975) och deras respektive. Detta omfattade besök vid gravarna på Rose Hill Cemetery och New Sweden Cemetery.

The peak of this summer was the reunion with Torparna in Idaho Falls, USA, July 5-8 2012.

• A number about ten from Sweden and more than four times of americans joined the activities. For many of the swedes it was the first time they visited the US. 

• Most, I will adress my profound thanks to Kathy and Frank Weaver in Idaho Falls, and their children and grandchildren, for the wonderful work they made to make the visit in Idaho so great and unforgetable.

• The reunion focused on two things. Letting the participants to know each other, be together and make ties of friendship - and giving us the opportunity to follow the footsteps from the first members of our family who settled down in New Sweden, which the area west of Idaho Falls town is called.

• There are several highlights from the days to remember. Among them the visit at Kristina and Oscar Beckman farm in the New Sweden area and the joyful afternoon parties in Kathy and Frank´s garden.

• Moments of solemnety it was, when we honoured the sibblings who arrived as immigrants in Idaho in the 1910th and 1920s: Nanny Beckman (1889-1983), Thure Anderson (1892-1967), Hjalmar Anderson (1898+1956) och Fred Thursie (1901-1975) and their spouses. This included visits at the graves at Rose Hill Cemetey and New Sweden Cemetery.

Magnus Andersson (1837-1920) Nytt... och det tidigare.

Torparna.com kan presentera "nyfunna" och bra bilder av Magnus Andersson och hans hustru Johanna, torparparet som den när släkthistorien utgår ifrån.

Bilderna är från ett fotoalbum från Christina Beckman, dotter till paret, vilket nu ägs av barnbarnet Nan Maniscalco i Kalifornien.

 De porträtterade har tills nu varit "okända" och bilderna förbryllande, eftersom de antagits ha tagits i en fotostudio i Providence i Rhode Island på USA:s östkust. Bilderna är uppklistrade på kartong med firmalogotypen för Morton på 87 Westminster street. Torparparet från Åsenhöga har bevisligen aldrig varit i USA, om de ens lämnade Småland under sina livstider?

 En föreläsning jag nyligen var på, om utvandrare från Sverige som blev fotografer i USA, satte tankarna i rullning och fick mig att åter granska bilderna som Nan skickade mig för ganska länge sedan. Föredragshållaren, Claes Jacobsson, berättade att det inte var ovanligt att immigranter i USA gick till en fotostudio med bilder som de haft med sig från hemlandet, för att få dem duplicerade. Från studion levererades fotografierna på kartong, med firmans märke.

 I det här fallet kan man sluta sig till att den "skyldige" varit Christinas syster Emma, som efter utvandringen från Småland i maj 1894 slog sig ned och gifte sig i Providence. Christina hade för egen del utvandrat fyra år tidigare. Fotografierna borde därmed ha varit tagna mellan 1890-94 och vid ögats jämförelse med de porträtt vi tidigare kunnat använda, "utklippta" från gruppbilden från parets guldbröllop 1910, stämmer detta tidsmässigt.

Johanna Andersson (1839-1923) New... and the former one.

Torparna.com presents "recent found" and exceptional pictures of Magnus Andersson and his wife Johanna, the crofters (tenant farmers) this family history is beginning with.

The photographs are from an album originated from Christina Beckman, daughter of the couple, which now is own by the granddaughter Nan Maniscalco in California.

 The portrayed have until now been "unknown" and the photos baffling, as they have believed been taken in a photographers studio in Providence, Rhode Island. The pictures are glued at cardboard with the logo of Morton at 87 Westminister street. The crofters from Åsenhöga have never been in the USA, if they even have been out of Småland county?

 A lecture I recently visited, about emigrants from Sweden who became photographers in the USA, put my thoughts in motion. I once again examined the scanned pictures Nan sent me three years ago. The lecturer, Claes Jacobsson, told that it was common by immigrants in the US to bring photos they brought from Sweden to a studio to get them duplicated. The studio delivered the copies on cardboard, whith their logo on it.

 In this case we can presume that the "guilty" one was Emma, the sister of Christina, who after her emigration from Småland in May 1894 settled down and got married in Providence. Christina emigrated four years before Emma. The photos of the crofters couple are, based on that, taken between 1890-94 and an eye comparison with the portaits we until now have used, "cut" from the group photo from the couple´s golden wedding celebration, confirms this.

Försök görs just nu att dokumentera den bildsamling som en gång fanns hos Hilding Andersson i Rydöbruk. Det är främst bilder från Rydö, men också åtskilliga från Idaho i USA från 1900-talet.

Från Thure Andersons sommar 1960 i Sverige. Fr v: Hilding, äldste sonen Nils och sittande Thure. Vem är mannen i rutig skjorta till höger? Nils körde Thure och Hilding ett par gånger till Gislaved och Åsenhöga. Bland annat hälsade de på "Gustav vid Fållkärret" intill Åsafors i Åsenhöga/Stengårdshult. Kan det vara han?/

Nils drove Thure and Hilding a couple of thimes to Gislaved and Åsenhöga. Among others they visited "Gustav at Fållkärret" next to Åsafors in Åsenhöga/Stengårdshult parishes. Could it be him?

2010-02-16: Hitta torpen på Google Earth

Har du Google Earth nedladdat på din dator kan du snabbt leta upp torpen i Åsenhöga genom söka via koordinaterna i Google Earth.

Gör så här:

1) Gå in på Google Earth

2) Markera någon av koordinaterna (57° osv...) för torpen här nedan med musen och kopiera koden:

För torpet Ramnåsen:

57° 28'6.86" N 13° 46'47.29" E

För torpet Hagen:

57°27'14.88" N 13°51'16.37" E

För torpet Bäckarydet:

57°26'42.49" N 13°50'16.24" E

3) Hoppa tillbaka till Google Earth och klistra in koden i rutan "Ta mig till... . Klicka sedan på förstoringsglaset till höger. Google Earth zoomar då in till torpet och du kan sedan med musen utforska omgivningarna.

2010-02-16: Find the cottages at Google Earth

If you got Google Earth downloaded at your computer, you may easily find the cottages in Åsenhöga by using their coordinates in searches at Google Earth.

Do as follows:

1) Start your Google Earth

2) Mark any of the coordinates (57° osv...) of the cottages which here follows with the mouse and copy the line:

cottage Ramnåsen:

57° 28'6.86" N 13° 46'47.29" E

cottage Hagen:

57°27'14.88" N 13°51'16.37" E

cottage Bäckarydet:

57°26'42.49" N 13°50'16.24" E

3) Jump back to Google Earth and past the code in the square "Take me to... . Then click at the magnifying glass symbol at the right, and Google Earth will zoom down to the spot. Then you are able to explore the area and its surroundings with your computer mouse.

If you don´t have the program Google Earth on your computer you may find the pictures through your web browser. It´s much more easy also. Just click on: The Cottages, and your will find them directly in a new window.
