Torparna är ännu ingen
organisation eller formell sammanslutning av något slag, utan har växt fram
genom sporadiska och ibland mer intensiva kontakter mellan ättlingar till ett
torparpar från Åsenhöga i Småland på 1800-talet, vilka bor på varsin sida om
Atlanten. Resultatet är dessa websidor.
Arbetet med dessa websidor och andra
delar i projektet görs med ideella insatser.

Torparna
(The crofters) is not yet a formal organization or society. It has just
emerged from sporadic contacts and a meeting of descendants of these crofters
from Åsenhöga parish in Sweden and descendants in America. We are
attempting to shorten the distance between us, who live on both sides of the
Atlantic ocean.
The making of this web pages
and other parts of the project are made by idealistic work.
The crofters we speak of are:
Magnus Andersson (1838-1920) and
Johanna Nilsdotter (1839-1923)

Then you may join in on this pages. Just send facts
about your self (about birth, family and other info as well, for instance
where you have been living, occupations, etc.) to torparna.com
We will then place you in
the family tree.
Also other material is wanted:
texts, biografical data, photographs, diary notes, letters and other things
that support the telling of the history of this family.

Från 1860 och sex decennier framåt
levde Anders Magnus Andersson och Johanna Matilda Nilsdotter
tillsammans under lågt torpartak i Åsenhöga församling i södra
delarna av Jönköpings län.
Anders Magnus var snickare. På
sommarhalvåret byggde han hus, ladugårdar och fähus åt bönderna i
trakten. Under de mörka vintrarna snickrade han möbler åt samma
bönder i sin vindskammarverkstad.
Sju av de nio barnen levde till vuxen
ålder och kunde sätta en ny generation torparättlingar till världen.
Dessa sju övergav också den enkla och fattiga tillvaro som de vuxit
upp i och begav sig ut i världen.
NÅGRA
AV DEM KORSADE ATLANTEN. De klippte av det
osynliga band som i århundraden fjättrat ätten till en handfull
intill varandra liggande socknar, där på kanten av det Småländska
höglandet. De inledde en social resa. En färd som speglar uppbrottet
från det gamla bondesamhället och som den framväxande
industrialismen i Sverige i slutet 1800-talet förde med sig.
På en enda generation tog de ett
gigantiskt steg. Vi, deras barnbarn i flera generationer, känner
fortfarande riktningen på dessa steg inom oss när vi skapar våra
egna liv. Kanske kan vi också i djupet av våra själar fortfarande
förnimma trädens sus från platserna där Anders Magnus och Johanna
levde.

barnbarn till torparna som sveptes iväg av den stora emigrationsvåg
mot Amerika som utgick från vårt land på
1800-talet och under 1900-talets inledning.

From 1860
and six decades further
Anders Magnus Andersson and Johanna Matilda Nilsdotter lived under
the low roofs of cottages, in Åsenhöga parish in the southern part
of Jönköping county, Sweden.
Anders Magnus was a carpenter. During
summer seasons he built houses, barns and cattle sheds
for the nearby
farmers. During the dark winter months he did
joinery work in his shop
in the attic, for
the same farmers.
Seven of the nine children lived to
be grown ups, and gave birth to a new generation. Those seven also
abandoned the simple and poor life in which they were raised - and
set of for the world.
SOME
OF THEM CROSSED THE ATLANTIC OCEAN. They
cut of those invisible bonds that had tied the family to a couple of
neighboring parishes, there at the edge of Småland Highlands. They
began a social journey - a journey that mirrors the
general break up of the
peasant society that was brought
by the industrialism in progress during the 19th century.
Within one generation they took a
giant step. We, the grandchildren of the crofters in several
generations, still feel the significance
of that step when we create our own lives.
Maybe we are, deep in our souls, also able to sense the sound of
the wind in the trees from the places were Anders Magnus and Johanna
lived.
OUR
MEETING PLACE,

website, offers a place for all descendants to discover our roots
and take part in writing our own history
- including the children, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren of the crofters who participated in the great
emigration to America from Sweden during the mid-19th century and
the beginning of the 20th century.
